The Subaru EJ engine is a series of four-stroke automotive engines manufactured by Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.

These Subaru EJ series engines are a fine piece of machinery.
Once you start working on them, you will find that they belong to the high end of engineering design.

-The setup is simple, compact, "bullet" proof and therefore very reliable.
-The older (pre 1996) standard SOHC types are non interfering.
-The crank shaft has five main bearings.
-The two cylinder heads are similar and interchangable.
-The two camshafts are different though, but can be changed/replaced easily.
-Engine overhaul is easy and can be done without the need for special tools.

I.e. a SOHC EJ22 produces, in atmospheric aspirated setup, easily 140 HP
The same engine in turbo configuration can easily produce up to 200 HP
The DOHC turbo types go even up to 300HP

The EJ series were introduced in 1989, intended to succeed the previous Subaru EA engine.

The EJ series are all 16-valve horizontal flat-fours, with configurations available for single, or double-overhead camshaft arrangements (SOHC or DOHC).

Naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions are available, ranging from 96 to 320 hp (72 to 239 kW; 97 to 324 PS).

These engines are commonly used in light aircraft,

Overhaul parts are widely available at low prices
